Why do we use Saturday as our changeover day?
On a Friday traffic is very heavy indeed coming into or departing South Wales via the M4 or M5/M50 or A465 (Heads of Valleys Road). This is especially after 11am (on Friday's).
Therefore we base our changeovers around Saturdays on which the traffic into and out of South Wales is much quieter and relaxed.

Driving through mid Wales
Routes through mid Wales are also quieter on a Saturday (i.e. North Wales or North West of England to South Wales such as by example, Wrexham via Newtown to Swansea or Cardiff such as the A470 and A465).

But from vast experience driving through mid Wales over many years our advice is that these mid Wales routes are very beautiful but do tend to take approximately the same time overall (around 4hrs to 4.5hrs) on any day of the week and regardless which specific route you choose. There are very few safe opportunities to overtake and lots of junctions or roundabouts and the roads tend to be single lane in either direction.
If you do decide to drive from North Wales (e.g. Wrexham/Chester/Liverpool/Manchester) our suggested fastest easiest route from years of working in public sector roles and attending endless meetings across Wales would be as follows below (Word of advice - beware of using SatNavs !):

A483 - Wrexham to Newtown (via Oswestry and Welshpool)
(Petrol and Macdonalds in Newtown)
A489 & A470 - Newtown to Newbridge on Wye, (via Landinam, Llanidloes, Llangurig, Rhayader)
B4358 - for 5 miles from Newbridge to Beulah (petrol station at Bulah)
A483 Bulah to Landovery via Llanwwrtyd Wells and Cynghordy
A40 Llandovery (petrol) to Llandeilo (petrol)
A483 for half a mile Llandeilo to Fairfach
A476 Fairfach via Carmel to Cross Hands (petrol & macdonalds)
A48 then M4 Cross Hands to J47 Penllagear for Swansea West

Then use our more detailed road directions on our booking sheet from J47 of the M4 to Llanmadoc
(so .... to Gowerton via A483, A484, Victoria Road, then turn right at Gowerton on B4295, then 10 miles later at Oldwalls, Llanrhidian, take minor road via Leason Landimore & Cheriton)
